  • Confidence

  • Motivation

  • Coping with Injury

Common Sport and Performance Psychology Myths

While Sport and Performance Psychology is a useful tool for improving performance, it is not a “magic pill” that will automatically make you a better performer. Think of it this way: One trip to the gym does not make you immediately stronger; it takes consistent practice and effort to see results. It is the same thing with mental performance. The mental skills provided through mental performance coaching are expected to be practiced before, during, and after a performance.

Along with this, Sport and Performance Psychology is not therapy. It is very common for people to believe that someone who sees a mental performance coach has a “problem”, but this is far from the truth. If an individual works out to get physically stronger, they aren’t seen as someone who has a problem; they are seen as someone looking to better themselves. In the same way, someone who is using mental performance techniques is simply bettering themselves mentally.

Who can utilize Sport and Performance Psychology?

A person playing the guitar
A football player preparing to throw the ball to a receiver at practice
A firetruck driving down the street in the woods

Even though the profession is called sport and performance psychology, the main focus is on performance. This is because EVERYONE is a performer in some way. Whether it is an athlete, speaker, musician, or first responder, the skills learned through mental performance coaching can be applied in any profession. Essentially, if you are looking to improve your performance, SPP is for YOU!
